Beechridge, Baldock
Updated August 2008
Start on site has been delayed due to the nesting of bats. These creatures are protected by law. so demolition is due to commence late summer 2008. In the meantime security measures have been put in place to protect the site.
Development Plan
The Site
Historically, Beechridge Lodge in Woodland Way provided short-term housing for single, homeless people. The accommodation closed in 2007 and residents will be re-homed in other locations. This was because the design of the building and its amenities no longer reflected the needs of the residents.
Temple Court is an existing care scheme which cannot be easily adapted to meet future needs. Rather than 'patch up' an outdated structure, it was decided that the residents should be given a brand new, bespoke building. The replacement will be erected prior to the closure of Temple Court to ensure that residents can remain in Woodland Way.
The Site (Local amenities, Transport etc)
This site is approximately 1 mile from the centre of Baldock.
A large supermarket is located within 1 mile of the development.
There are 10 primary schools within 3 miles of the site and 11 state secondary schools within 7 miles.
Baldock railway station is just over 1 mile away.
Consultation
The consultation process is underway. Residents at Temple Court were asked to comment on the proposals and initial designs at meetings held in June and July 2007. A separate consultation for other local residents was also held in July 2007. Consultation will continue up to and beyond submission of a planning application.
