John Barker Place

(John Barker Place – Current View)

 Updated April 2008

Public consultation has now been completed, although further meetings may be required prior to planning.

Development Plan
NHH and NHDC are working in partnership to regenerate the Westmill area of Hitchin. Along with the Westmill community association, Groundwork Hertfordshire and other service providers, NHH and NHDC will improve housing and community facilities for local people.
A feasibility study considering future options for the area around John Barker Place was commissioned in 2005 and completed in 2006. This Plan, along with a detailed project brief and the design requirements listed by residents, retailers and service providers, will be used by an architect to create a final design.
This design will be completed in full consultation with local stakeholders. It will comprise a two – phase regeneration of: housing, retail units and youth and community centres.
The Site (Description of site background, reason for development)
Two sites for redevelopment have been identified on opposite sides of John Barker Place. The buildings in this area mainly date from the 1960s and 1970s. These now require replacement, rejuvenation and / or repair due to the passage of time, and changes in lifestyle.
The Site (local amenities, Transport etc)
There will be a small supermarket and takeaway within the new development. Other shops and a post office can be found close by on Redhill Road.
Hitchin town centre is approximately 1.5 miles away.
The number 81 bus travels between Westmill and Hitchin railway station via the town. There are a number of primary and secondary schools in and around Hitchin.
Consultation (details of activities to be undertaken/completed)
The consultation process undertaken to create the feasibility study was completed early in 2006. Since then, NHH and NHDC have sought further comment from the community through informal meetings with service providers. The consultation process leading to a finalized design will begin in September 2007.
