The Site (description of site background, reason for development)

This site currently comprises three blocks containing 36 flats. The residents in these blocks were consulted about replacing their homes with modern alternatives. Nearly all were happy with the idea and supported the proposals.

Planning consent for redevelopment was granted in August 2006.

This scheme will contribute to the wider rejuvenation of the Westmill Estate. Much work has already been done on improving surrounding homes and a separate regeneration project is planned.

The Site (Local amenities, Transport etc)

Local shops and takeaways are located at John Barker Place and Redhill Road. There are primary and secondary schools and a community centre within one mile of the development.

Milestone Road is approximately 1.5 miles from Hitchin town centre.

The No.81 bus transports residents into the town centre.

Consultation (details of activities to be undertaken/completed)

Public consultation was undertaken in January 2006. Local residents received letters and colour graphics of the proposed schemes. The designs were also displayed at the Hitchin Neighbourhood Office and posted on the NHH website. A half-page press release was included in The Comet.

Feedback was summarised in a report that accompanied the planning application. Louise Ward, Tenant Liasion Officer remains in continuous discussion with residents about their options.

When construction works begin, NHH and / or the contractor will keep the public notified of significant issues.
