- NHH Initiative wins High Sheriff Award -
22 April 2010

The Friday Night Project, a partnership initiative supported by North Hertfordshire Homes, has won first prize in the 2010 High Sheriff’s Hertfordshire Crimebeat Awards.
The project was set up to combat anti-social behaviour caused by youths. By targeting known problem areas where young people previously gathered in Hitchin, Letchworth and Baldock, it has offered diversionary activities, helped develop their skills and creativity as well as raised their awareness of social issues.
Every Friday night a session is held in each town open to young people aged between 12 and 18 years old. Content varies from sporting activities to providing information on sexual health, healthy eating and substance misuse. Statistics show that during the period the project has been running an average of 100–150 young people have regularly attended.
The Award, which is an annual event, was presented by Janie Wentworth-Stanley, High Sheriff of Hertfordshire at a ceremony held at Hertford County Hall. It is part of the National Crimebeat scheme co-ordinated locally by Hertfordshire Community Foundation to give recognition for projects involving young people in activities which have an impact on crime reduction and community safety.
As overall winners of the Crimebeat Awards the project was awarded a prize of £1,000.
The project is run by Child UK in partnership with, North Hertfordshire Homes, North Hertfordshire Constabulary, North Herts District Council, Youth Connexions, North Herts Extended Schools Co-ordinators, Community Safety team for North Herts, Hitchin Town Football Club, Khalsa Youth Soccer, Herts Sports Partnership and Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue.
