23 September 2010
North Hertfordshire Homes and Groundwork Hertfordshire are celebrating success today after they were Highly Commended at the Homes & Communities Awards last night (23rd September) in London.
Their joint venture, ‘The Green Team’ had been short listed in the Investing in Skills category that recognises efforts to tackle worklessness through training and apprenticeships. The Green Team offers young people not in employment, education or training, the skills and qualifications to help with job prospects.
The young people, all boys between 16 and 21 years, undertook sixteen weeks of training which saw them working voluntarily throughout the harshest winter in 30 years. They were rewarded with a City and Guilds Diploma, a Construction Skills Certification Card and a First Aid certificate as well as help with CVs and interview skills.
Steve Harvey, Groundwork executive director said "The partnership between North Hertfordshire Homes and Groundwork produced an outstanding project, but the real stars of the show are the young people who worked so hard as volunteers and produced outstanding work. This fantastic national award is a wonderful endorsement of the young people's positivity and commitment."
Kevin Thompson, North Hertfordshire Homes chief executive said “Many of the projects the Green Team worked on were nominated by our tenants, and I know they were really impressed with the final outcome and the positive attitude of the lads. We are proud of what they accomplished, so we will run a new project in January.”
