- New affordable homes secured despite cuts -
18 October 2010
Local landlord North Hertfordshire Homes has secured government funding through the Homes and Communities Agency to build 76 new affordable homes across North Hertfordshire.
Chief executive, Kevin Thompson, said “The recession means the government has had to reduce the amount of money it is spending on helping to fund affordable housing, with only around £20 million being made available for the whole of the East of England this year. Competition for funding was fierce, and we were delighted to win over £4.4 million”.
The money will help to build 76 new affordable rented, shared ownership and supported homes in North Hertfordshire. The majority of the new homes will be spread over three sites in Hitchin, although four new homes are being provided for villagers in Radwell.
Councillor Bernard Lovewell who holds North Hertfordshire District Council’s Housing & Environmental Health portfolio said, “This is very positive news. The need for affordable housing in our area is increasing, and by working in close partnership, the District Council and North Hertfordshire Homes can continue to provide new homes that will make a real difference to local families.”
Work will commence on the schemes in the near future and should be completed in early 2012.
