Content Insurance

Home Contents Insurance

The Home Contents Insurance policy is a contract between North Hertfordshire Homes, Norwich Union and the Policyholder.  It is formed by a proposal form.

Norwich Union will insure you against loss, damage or legal liability which may happen during the period you are covered for.  This is based on the information you gave us and the declaration you made in the proposal form.  It also depends on the terms of the policy.

The Insurance Schedule states the sum insured and the weekly premium.

The policy document sets out all the circumstances when you can make a claim.  It tells you how Norwich Union settle claims and the maximum amounts we will pay.

Insurance policies do not cover you against every loss.  There are also certain conditions which you must meet.  For example, you must make sure that your property is in a good state of repair and you must take all reasonable steps to prevent injury, loss or damage.

Payment of premiums should be made together with your rent.  Premiums should be paid weekly or alternatively in advance.  Insurance payments should always by kept up-to-date.  Payment for Insurance can be made at any Paypoint that accepts the swipe card.  Late or non-payment of premiums may prejudice claim settlement.

Housing Benefit does not apply to insurance premiums.  Even if you are on full Housing Benefit, you are obliged to pay premiums.

How to Claim

Emergency Out-of Hours helpline

This service is operated by Robins Response, Loss Adjusters and will provide you with assistance for home emergencies.  It is available 24 hours a day.

Your helpline telephone number is 0870 606 1234.

Please be reminded that any repair changes will be indicated to YOU before YOU accept the contractor’s help and payment of bill will be your responsibility.  However, if the damage is covered by your policy, Norwich Union will reimburse YOU for the bill.  Claims should be submitted after following the claims procedure policy document.

Non-emergency claim

  • Firstly obtain a claim form from North Hertfordshire Homes.
  • Report to the police all incidents of accidental loss, theft, attempted theft or vandalism, loss, damage or injury caused by malicious persons.  Obtain a Police Incident Number to record on the claim form.
  • Complete the claim form and return it to the Loss Adjuster, at the address shown on the back cover of the policy, without delay.  Claims not submitted within 40 days of the incident will be disallowed.
  • Supply at your own expense all reports, certificates, plans, specifications, information and assistance reasonably required.  Send to the Loss Adjuster immediately, at the address on the back of the policy, every letter or document about a claim.  You, or any other person insured under this policy, or anyone acting on your or their behalf, must not negotiate any claim or admit or deny liability without our written permission.
  • Ensure that no damaged item is disposed of without being seen by the Loss Adjuster who is appointed to act independently of the Policyholder and the Insurers in settling claims.

What Next?

Norwich Union can defend or settle any legal action in your name, or in the name of any other person insured by this policy.  They can recover any payment they make under the policy to anyone else at their own expense and for their own benefit and they can do it in your name or in the name of any other person insured by this policy.  They can ask you and any other person insured by this policy for all the information and help they need.

Following a claim, the amount insured will be automatically reinstated to that shown on the current schedule.

Should you not receive a schedule on joining the scheme or after you have notified North Hertfordshire Homes of a change to your policy details, you should contact us as a matter of urgency.  Unlike other insurance policies, your policy, under North Hertfordshire Homes Scheme, does not have an annual renewal date.  In no circumstances will the policy lapse (although it may be invalidated if you fail to disclose any material facts or may be cancelled if you fail to pay the premium).
