Housing Options
Not everyone who applies for social housing is going to be successful and those in lower housing need, who have less priority, will wait a long time.
There are alternative housing options which you may wish to consider:
Mutual Exchange – Homeswapper
If you are an existing North Hertfordshire Homes tenant, you can apply to swap your home with another social housing tenant , so long as it meets a set of qualifying criteria. Renting privately
Privately rented accommodation provides valuable solutions for people with a variety of housing needs. North Hertfordshire District Council can help customers find out more about these properties. You may be able to claim Housing Benefit to help towards the cost of the rent, depending on your circumstances. Please call us on 01462 474000 and ask to speak to a Housing Benefit adviser, with details of your income.
Deposit Guarantee Scheme
The deposit guarantee scheme enables people to access properties in the private sector. It aims to help people who are:
- homeless or threatened with homelessness and
- have a priority need for housing (eg with dependent children, disability/illness, vulnerable) and
- have a local connection with North Herts.
North Hertfordshire District Council helps applicants to find landlords who will accept a deposit guarantee and who also accept tenants on low incomes or on housing benefit payments. The Council provides access to these properties but does not manage them. The individual owners manage the properties.
