What is Extra Care Sheltered Housing?
Extra Care Sheltered Housing can in many cases eliminate the need for residential care and allow tenants to maintain an element of independence. This service is for people who require assistance with identified care needs that can be delivered on a flexible basis. It is also suitable for those who require many types of personal care or their meals provided.

We have four extra care schemes, which are:-
Andersons House – Florence Street, Hitchin
Robert Humbert House – Rushby Mead, Letchworth
Temple Court – Woodland Way, Baldock
St Andrews House – Kershaw Road, Hitchin
Scheme facilities & services
All our schemes have the following range of facilities, enabling our staff to provide the highest standard of care.
- Modern, self-contained flats with bedroom, kitchen and private bathroom
- Facilities for showering or assisted bathing
Services offered
In addition each Extra Care Sheltered Housing scheme offers the following range of services:
- On site staff providing care 24 hours a day (active 8am to 10pm and emergency care throughout the night). This service is registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection and is graded as a three-star, Excellent service. Click here to read the full report.
- An emergency alarm system (all flats and communal areas are fitted with a pull-cord alarm to call for assistance at any time)
- Assistance with getting up and dressing, bathing, meals, laundry services, prompting medication and other aspects of personal care
- All water, lighting and heating charges included in the rent
- Mobile library service
- Scheme newsletter
- Regular social activities
- Regular lunch clubs and morning coffee/afternoon tea
- Religious services including collective worship
- Visiting hairdresser, optician, dentist, chiropodist, hearing aid adviser and local traders by prior arrangement
What will the Extra Care services cost me?
Alongside the rental payment for your apartment, there is an Extra Care Service Charge. This Service Charge is priced on three bands according to your needs.
A. £64.50
B. £43.15
C. £22.10
These charges are allocated as information on the documentation ‘Service Users Abilities Assessments’ which is done monthly, however, the charges are banded according to the amount of care needed regarding visits, baths or showers, administration of medication and laundry.
How do I apply?
Simply fill in a Common Housing Register application form available from our Neighbourhood Offices based in Letchworth Garden City, Baldock, Hitchin or Royston.
